When someone says “I'm in a fraternity,” the initial thought is probably along the lines of “So you can drink?” or “All frat guys are jerks.” The entertainment industry has characterized Greek life in a stereotypical way that wrongfully depicts what really happens behind chapter doors. There are a multitude of social media accounts (i.e. Barstool, Fifth Year, Old Row) that perpetuate the stigma of the “frat life” on college campuses, further distorting the correct view of what a fraternity stands for. Family members who were in fraternities even reminisce about the crazy events that happened to them and fail to highlight the post-graduate benefits that helped them succeed. IFC at Florida State has helped pivot away from the theatrical idea of what it means to join a fraternity towards amplifying the reality of fraternity life today. Throughout the years, we have worked against these false assumptions by better addressing our core values and creating a safe atmosphere for new members.
